Windshield replacement

I was driving a couple of weeks ago when an eighteen-wheeler pulled in front of me. A rock flew up, and put a huge rock chip on my windshield. Within a couple of hours the chip became a foot long crack.
Needing to get it replaced, I called a couple of windshield replacement places for quotes.

I went to SafeLite’s website, filled out my car’s make, model, year etc… and requested a callback with a quote.
Here’s a transcript of the phone call:

CSR: What kind of windshield replacement do you want?
Me: One that fits my car.
CSR: What car do you have?
Me: It should be in your system. I filled out the online form.
CSR: To look up your information, I need your phone number.
Me: You have it. You just called me.
CSR: Oh right, here it is. So, I see there are two different windscreens that fit your car.
CSR: A regular windshield, and a PAAS windshield. Which would you like?
Me: What’s the difference?
CSR: One of them is PAAS.
Me: What’s that?
CSR: Just a different model. Do you know if you have the regular or PAAS model in your car right now?
Me: You haven’t explained the difference, so how would I know? What’s the difference in price?
CSR: The PAAS is $150 more.
Me: Is it better?
CSR: It’s just different.
Me: Could you get someone on the phone that knows the difference?
CSR: Um… sure.
Me: Thanks
Supervisor: PAAS stands for Pre-Applied Adhesive System.
Me: So, that means it has a different adhesive?
Supervisor: Yes. In the event of an accident, if won’t fall out.
Me: So the cheaper windshield might just fall out?
Supervisor: I don’t know. Your car manufacturer would be able to better advise you on the differences.
Me: I think I’ll look elsewhere. Thanks.

[Update]
I forgot to mention, they offered me a lifetime warranty.
Me: Does it cover rockchips?
CSR: No
Me: What does it cover?
CSR: Nothing caused by a collision.
Me: How about vandalism?
CSR: No.
Me: So basically it only covers if my windshield breaks by itself while sitting in my garage overnight?
CSR: Um…..

Sprint customer support

I've had my Sprint account for about 6 years now. I've been very happy with the prices and reception. Their customer service, however, has never been very good.
Throughout those 6 years I've had about 8 different phones. I started with a flip phone, then had 2 windows mobile phones, then gave the phone to Denisse, and switched it to a BlackBerry, and then, when she got a work phone, switched it to an regular 'feature' phone.

I have a special plan with Sprint. I got it through an employee referral, and I get several extra perks. One of those perks is for overages. If I go over my minutes, they charge me $5 for each additional block of 100 mins (rather than a rip-off 45 cents a minute). Because it's so cheap to go over minutes, I don't have to worry about it, and I can have a 500 minute/month plan. Then I'll occasionally pay $5/$10 if I go over. Great deal, right? Better than needing to have a higher minutes plan just in case.

Here comes the problem. When I recently switched from the BlackBerry to the feature phone, they removed the overage feature without telling me. So, this month, we'd gone over 239 minutes. Rather than costing the usual $15, it cost $112.05 (at 45 cents /minute). Obviously I call sprint to complain.

Sprint CSR - We can't do anything about it. It's your fault, you went over minutes
Me - You can do something about it, and you will, as you changed my plan without telling me. I was expecting a $15 charge, not a $112 charge
Sprint CSR - hold please.

car salesmen roundup

So, I've been to 3 different places to test drive cars (2 dealers and 1 private) in the last two days.

I asked the following questions immediately after finishing the test drive.

The third private seller is by far the most amusing.

1. (dealership) - This dealership deserved the previous blog post.

Me: Did you know the front right speaker is blown?

Salesman: What!, really? Are you sure you were using the CD player correctly?

2. (dealership)

Me: The tires are bald, they can't be legal.

Salesman: What!, I don't think so. Let me measure the tread.........Oh yea, you're right!

3. (Private)

Me: Did you know the check engine light is on.

Salesman: Oh, that's just cause the car is low on fuel.

Me: Did you notice this huge thud when you raise the front driver side window?

Salesman: Oh, that's probably because I just had the car washed.
Me: Are you flexible on the price?
Salesman: Not really. A dealership offered to give me 97% of my asking price as trade-in-value toward the SUV I want, but I turned him down.
Lets analyze the facts, the online ad I saw was 30 days old. So he turned down the dealership's offer and is willing to wait over a month in hopes to maybe get an extra 2-3%... whilst also risking not selling it......He's either an idiot, or a liar. I'm going to guess the second one.

How is it possible that in 5 minutes of test driving I seem to learn more about a car than the owners.

Adventures with used car salesmen

No, it's not what you think. This isn't the usual dishonest used car salesman story.
So, I've been looking to buy a car for the last few months. I do all of my searching online, and only go to test drive a car that I've already decided would probably be a good fit. Anyway, I go in, test drive a car, and we walk inside to 'run some numbers'.

The guy turns on his computer and notices that the icons on his screen (Windows Vista) are huge. He has no idea what's going on and starts complaining. He calls in one of the other guys and says "what did you do, you made all the icons huge. What did you do! How do I undo it!"
I'm of course chuckling inside, as it's pretty obvious that all that's happened is the screen resolution has been decreased. I decide to keep quiet, as they both seem to be passing on the blame. Then the second guy puts his hand on the monitor and does the pinch-to-zoom gesture. No, he was not joking. I quietly muttered "You know this isn't an iPad, right?"

Anyway, after a few minutes, they gave up, so I offered to fix it for them. I think their response was even more surprising. "Woa! how did you learn how to do that!"
Fortunately, I refrained from replying "By myself, when I was 7."

Las Vegas 2010 / Thanksgiving / Black Friday ...(and Cyber Monday... muahahaha!)

Las Vegas is so much fun with the Williams family. There's abundant food, the nice hotels, the strip, the shopping, the shows (Matsuri this year) and there's no cooking or cleaning for anybody! It almost seems like it goes by too fast. A big part of celebrating Thanksgiving in Las Vegas is Black Friday. We go to the outlets and get some Christmas shopping done then, the guys make their mandatory stop at Best Buy and Fry's, we all go to Costco and pretend to buy stuff just to get our complimentary cooking book, etc. Well, for Antony, Thanksgiving weekend is not over on Sunday, but until Cyber Monday. Remember that we just moved in to our first house and brought very little furniture with us since we moved from a 1-bedroom apartment. So on Monday night, like at 11:30 pm ( I was already asleep), Antony comes and wakes me up and whispers, "Denisse! Do you want to go ahead and buy the couches that you have been looking at online? Because there's a big coupon going on right now; yes or no??? Fast!" I said yes, halfway awake, and went back to sleep. Before we left for Vegas he also found a deal for an office desk... for like $130!!!! It was also one of those moments... "Denisse! Come over here! Do you want this or not? It's probably mis-marked, so we have to decide now before they realize it. Fast!!!" So we finally have an official desk for Antony, and a new set of couches!!! (But now I cannot give him a desk for Christmas anymore... *sigh*)

Adventures at the fuel pump

This happened at the Conoco in American Fork, UT.

I get off work and drive to the nearest petrol station. I pull out my credit card, swipe, and begin fueling. I've only put in about a gallon when a woman (dressed in Conoco employee uniform) comes out and starts yelling that I haven't paid for gas. I tell her that I swiped my card. She repeats herself, getting frustrated with me, and tells me I need to come inside to pay. I'm obviously a little annoyed at this point, as I was in a bit of a hurry.

I go inside, and the woman explains that the guy on the pump next to me had pre-paid $15 for fuel, and by some accident, they'd allotted the money to my pump by mistake, and I'd used his fuel. She then proceeds to tell me that I owe this random guy $3.07. She asks me to pay him. I obviously refuse. I then tell the lady that I was going to pay with a credit card. I explain that I bought the fuel from Conoco, and will be paying Conoco with my credit card. The Conoco employee says she doesn't know how to fix the problem. The only solution is for me to pay the guy $3.07, the guy then pumps the remaining $11.93, then pays Conoco my $3.07 and pumps that. She claimed there was no other way, and asks me if I can drive to an ATM to get the money. Being so extremely complicated (note the sarcasm), I explain that the guy can pump the remaining $11.93 and then I can do a pre-pay of $3.07 with my credit card, which he can then pump as well. Then everyone's paid and everyone's happy (except for the fact that I've just wasted 10 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.)

Sounds simple, right?

Wrong.

Everything goes according to plan. The guy pumps the remaining $11.93. I then pre-pay for $3.07. But, then, rather than send my $3.07 to the guy's pump, the lady send the $3.07 to a different pump, and the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN. She darts out toward the pumps and starts screaming at this poor woman "You haven't paid, you haven't paid. Stop pumping fuel."

I'm not so much fed up at this point, I'm just shocked at the sheer incompetence. The woman asks me to wait until this is all sorted out. I kindly explain that I have now paid for my $3.07 of fuel, and that I'm free to leave. I also mention that I still only pumped 1 gallon of fuel, but that I will be using that gallon to get to a different gas station.

Our first home / first anniversary

So we have been searching for a house over the summer... I didn't think we would be looking into buying a house this soon. I thought "maybe 4 or 5 years down the road," but no. Prices are low, and Antony really wants to take advantage of that. Everything that we have looked at in our price range has been either in really bad condition, or with a lot of fixing up to do, or (nice but) without finished basements, with really only 2 usable bedrooms. The second day we searched we saw this really nice house, relatively new (2007), no up-front costs for fix-ups (which will free up our money to put a down payment instead of spending it on fixing the house). It was in very good condition- it looked like new, like nobody had lived there before. So we put an offer in that same day, and about 3 months later, after much delay (the bank lost our paperwork for a couple of weeks) and frustration, we are finally moving in to our first house! On the main (also top) floor it has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a study area for Antony by the entrance, a spacious kitchen (compared to the cubicle for kitchen that I had in our apartment) and a living room. Downstairs it has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a family room, laundry room and... wait for it, wait for it, - A COLD STORAGE ROOM!!! haha! It does make me excited to have a cold storage room. Finally. It ended up being bigger than what we were looking for, but it really was the only house within our budget, that did not require fix-ups, that was in the middle of our 2 jobs, close to the freeway, in a nice neighborhood, and with a finished basement.

What made it twice as special, was that we moved on the day of our first anniversary... I had initially requested it off from work (precisely because it was our anniversary) and later on it ended up being the only day we could move in... because we had it off! haha! So we celebrated it moving boxes and furniture. Family and friends helped us a lot, so it was not bad at all.

It is nice to have our own place, although it looks BARE (remember that we moved from a 1-bedroom apartment). Hopefully it will last.

I had an event going on, so I had to work (boo) but we still celebrated it the next day having dinner at his house, as usual. I gave him a new USB and 2 blu-rays. What else can you give to someone that has it all and does not get excited about other stuff that other people get excited about, like clothes, shoes...?

It's that national holiday again... you guessed right! My birthday! Well, it didn't feel as "special" because I spent it working. But Antony made sure I was pampered properly: He told me he had a surprise for me, but we had to go to a store first. So we get in the car, and we drive down to Sports Authority... he got me a bike! He knew how much I liked bike riding but my bike was still in Mexico, without any signs of being brought up here. So he just bought me a new one, and since we couldn't fit it in any of our cars, he rode it home (the store is close to our apartment). When we got to our apartment, he asked me, "do you like your new bike?" "Of course," I said. Then he reached behind the couch and said, "well, that's not everything!" And he pulled out a matching helmet! Then he said, "well, that's not everything!" And then he pulled out matching gloves! Now I look like a serious bike rider. I really like it! Lancome products, another coach bag, and a shirt were among other gifts too... so spoiled!

I also ate Tucano's food 3 times this month (twice at Noah's, and once at the restaurant for my birthday). No better way to celebrate my birthmonth!

Last weekend was my graduation from BYU... congratulations to meee!!! A graduation in Mexico is a big deal, I guess because not a lot of people get to graduate (a lot of people cannot even go to college to start with!). So everyone travels, and my graduation, although in another country, was not the exception. My parents came from WA, and one of my brothers came with his family from TX. What was even better, was that James, Antony's cousin, graduated at the same time I did, so his family came over too- which is now my family too. So I had both families' support. I had a lot of fun with Tony (my brother) and his family; his kids are innocently funny.

I got my degree in Leisure Services Management, and a minor in German (and another coach bag and a coat from Express to go with it). My degree covers the areas of tourism, resorts, hospitality industry, special events, the last one being my emphasis and area of interest. Luckily I am already working in my area of interest, so that couldn't have worked out better for me. :)

My internships

Even though I was done with classes and living in Sandy, I was not quite done with school yet. I still had to do two internships for my major, a small one and a big one. It was around November (2009) that I got the small internship at SPLORE, a non-profit org. that provides outdoor recreation for kids with disabilities. I was mostly involved in the administrative area of it ('cause you all know how much I dread outdoor recreation), helping with filing systems, translating documents to Spanish and especially organizing one of their big fund raiser events.

Although I had already gotten the first internship, I still had to find where to do the big one. Splore was 100 hours, basically 3 times a week for a few hours, for like 6 weeks. The big one was full time for one entire semester. The idea behind the full time internship was, of course, to do it as a job, or to get your foot in the door, and that way once you graduated you had a full time job lined-up. Well, I was running out of time and I was looking for jobs and/or internships. NO ONE WOULD TAKE ME EVEN FOR FREE. It seemed that nobody even needed volunteers at their place. (WHO wouldn't want volunteers???) Consider that this was when the economy was in the hole (not that it's not in the hole anymore..). The point is no one was hiring, nor taking volunteers. Not finding a full time internship by January did not only mean that I couldn't graduate on time, but it would put me out of status with immigration since I had not gotten my permanent residency yet, so I was still technically an international student, and as one I was supposed to enroll full time again in January, or lose my status and be deported. So on my way to follow up with a job I had applied for in Sandy, still not knowing the area very well, I ended up at Noah's, a "revolutionary" event center in Utah. Well, Noah's was not unknown to me, I actually knew exactly what it was. We even went on a tour of the facility they have in Lindon with one of my event classes with BYU semesters before. So I had known of Noah's for a while, and people kept asking me when I was looking for an internship "well, you are looking for something in the event industry, why don't you try Noah's?" and I never had an answer. It felt like Noah's was "too good to be true," so I never even tried. I believed it was out of my reach. Well, they have another facility in South Jordan, 3 miles from our apartment in Sandy.

Back to the day when I ran into the building, this happened at the beginning of December, and in my worst clothes ever, wearing SNEAKERS with jeans and a sweater that I walked in with a resume in my hand and asked to speak to the event coordinator. (Do you like how I am dramatizing the story?) She happened to be there, and we went into a boardroom and chatted for a while. She said she liked my resume, and she said that her current intern was finishing her internship in a week, and that she was going to need someone after that. She had owned her own event planning and floral studio in Park City for 10 years, and now Noah's had hired her company to do events in the building. So she gave me the internship right there, and told me to come back in January when my internship started, so I did. Woohoo! I was not going to be deported. (And I was happy for many other reasons too, not just that.)

So I started officially in January. There was a huge event at the end of January, it was actually a Christmas corporate party for Fairchild Semiconductors, and I made that my senior project. They rented out the entire building for 2 days; they sent half of their employees one day and half the next day. This was a theme event: we did 3 different themes on the 3 different floors: Hello to Hollywood, Viva Las Vegas, and New York New York. Here are some pictures:

So the internship requirements changed in the middle of the semester, and instead of doing one entire semester, it was now an hour requirement, and by that time I was going to complete my hours by the end of that same week. This happened in March. My internship technically ended on a Friday and by the next Monday I was hired full time. It was perfect timing. So I have already been working full time with real pay for over a month before I actually graduate this April. Happy times.

I received my Permanent Residency card in the mail, finally! I am grateful that everything went smoothly for me to get it; I started the paperwork last November, so it only took 3 months! Those 3 years of working at the International Services Office at BYU paid off!

As stated before, Antony is really good at presents (or I am easy to please). So after 5 months of complaining about the phone I had (which he passed on to me) he got me a new one: a blackberry! I absolutely love it, it's the perfect mix between smart and dumb phone, so it's advanced enough but it does not freeze. Thank you Antony! (I gave him tickes to a Rachmaninov Piano Concerto:D)

Christmas 2009

The Williams family certainly has a way to celebrate Christmas- the whole family gets together, even Antony's grandmother from Wales comes over, there is a lot of food and a LOT of presents. Now that I think about it, this is probably how most people spend Christmas, but it feels new to me since traditions in my family slowly died out towards the end. (We didn't even put up a Christmas tree for the last years.) Well, Antony has turned out to be quite the thoughtful husband; I have realized many times to my delightful surprise that he carefully listens to the things that I like or want, and makes a fabulous present out of them. For example:

a FANTASTIC pair of eccos! I love how comfortable these shoes are and the fact that you can polish them over and over again, and they look like new every time. THANK YOU Antony, I wear them every day for work and I think of you with every step I take ;)

Even though I was surprised with the shoes, Antony always finds a way to top it off with something even more unexpected:

A GPS to replace the one that was STOLEN from my car 2 weeks prior! I cannot tell you enough how much I liked having a GPS, (it means a lot for a person like me that never knows where North is) so it was nice to know that I wouldn't have to go long without one. THANK YOU again, Antony, I would be lost without you ;)

Back in April of 2009, Antony graduated from BYU. We got engaged right afterwards on May 9th. He then got a job in Sandy, UT doing IT stuff for a small company. I was taking my last classes at BYU, that would end in August. So we got married after the summer term ended, on August 28, 2009. I was done attending classes at BYU, so we were able to move to Sandy, where Antony's job was, right after we got married. We moved to an apartment where we lived for the first year. Here are some pictures.

We went to Orlando! (Another thing off my list!) We saw every inch of Disney World and it was "magical." :) We went to all of the resorts, got on all the fun rides, and did not have to deal with long lines. We just walked right in. One of my favorite shows was the Lion King and Finding Nemo. Antony also surprised me with tickets to a Cirque du Soleil show!!! My very first one, and I loved it. We also went shopping to the outlets since we were there over labor day weekend, and got a hold of a few good deals, among them a nice, little, silver coach purse for me. Like a good Mexican friend said once, "above all, Glamour."

Wedding

We got married in the Manti Temple. Why Manti? Because how my friend Cassi says, "it's preeeetty." Yes. No other reason, really. The first day I ever saw the Manti Temple in real life- was the day we got married there. It was not the most convenient location for everyone, especially for our family from out of state that would have to travel down there without knowing Utah, really. We had not been down that road either prior to our wedding day.
Antony and I drove together with Gemma, John, and Billy (our photographer) in John's car. We were already running late for our appointment and we got stuck behind a trailer and a car that were both going at the same speed, blocking both lanes, not letting anyone behind them overtake them. John was driving, and as soon as he saw some room to overtake the trailer we stepped on it. Well, since there was no room to the right, he went on the opposite lanes to overtake this trailer. There was this other trailer in the far distance coming, and we all thought, "plenty of time to overtake this annoying slowpoke." We actually encouraged him to do so ("do it John, do it!"). He starts overtaking the trailer, and his car would NOT accelerate. A few seconds later, the trailer in the opposite direction was [rapidly] approaching and we were still trying to overtake this trailer, and I asked John, "aren't you going to pass this trailer????" To which he replies hysterically "I'M TRYING TO!!!!!" (PANIC). He was FLOORING it and I guess the car was so heavy with 5 people and a full trunk, that the engine could not cope with it. There was a moment where we all doubted whether we should slow down and go back behind the trailer or still try to overtake it, but given the lack of time to "think" about it, John just kept going and barely- and I mean BARELY- with less than a second and a couple of yards to spare, we made it.... Yes people. This is NO exaggeration. We almost died the day of our wedding on the way to the temple. That is how our wedding day started... and the rest was just as "thrilling."

The whole temple experience went well. Our families were there to support us, they all made it on time (some even before us- how did that happen???). When we came out everyone was outside waiting for us; they cheered, we posed, and then we started taking pictures. Manti Temple grounds were basically exclusively ours that day- no other weddings going on while we were there. We took a lot of pictures, and went down to a luncheon to that place where everyone has their luncheons at the bottom of the hill. DELICIOUS meal. It was in a way our first wedding celebration, and it was nice to have it with the people closest to us in a private setting. After we were done, we headed back to Provo for our reception. Well, halfway back to Provo we realized we had left all of the flowers at the luncheon place. Antony's dad went back to get them while we made it back to Provo. We barely had a few minutes to take some pictures before the reception started.

We got to our reception place, the Provo City Library Ballroom. ( I LOVED our reception hall- the building facade is beautiful and it reminds me of my high school in Mexico, since they were built around the same time by the same people.) Our flowers miraculously arrived like 10 min after us (how did that happen too?). We snapped some pictures quickly, and went inside to get started with our ring ceremony. Well, we were holding that ring ceremony specifically for our family members that were not members of the church and were not at the sealing. They still had not arrived (we later found out they had gotten lost coming in to Provo). So once they arrived and were done with it, people started arriving for the reception... like clockwork!!! We started our sit-down dinner and then- the mariachis, of course!!!! A Mexican wedding is NOT a Mexican wedding without mariachis. And a sit-down dinner. And dancing. And dancing props.

Time went by so quickly, we were sent off with sparklers, went back to Antony's house to change clothes, and off the Grand America in Salt Lake. Our room was very luxurious. Now, every time we see a nice bathroom we both use "Grand America bathroom" as a reference. The food was also really good. Antony still talks about the "nata" (cream) with blueberries that came on top of my pancakes the next morning. We left for Orlando on honeymoon later that day.

I have been reluctant since we got married (or EVER) to start writing a blog, but after a year I figured it's at least a way to keep a record of what's happening, because a LOT has happened over the last year. I can see myself 2 or 3 years from now looking back and not remembering what we did for Christmas, or when we started our jobs. So after much insistence (and tutorials) from Antony, I have decided to (slowly) chronicle the events in our lives over the last year (and backdate them).. So for all of you that have been asking me for a blog... here you go! You better read it now.
